8/17/2023 0 Comments Betrayal at krondor 2The game world is rendered in three dimensions, with most objects and bad guys being two dimensional images. It can take a very very long time to completely scout out the Dimwood Forest, but exploration certainly does have its rewards. It also allows the player to experience far more of the side quests, and fictional flavour that has been written into the game. This is a highly effective strategy for advancing the characters very early on, making them rather powerful for the rest of the game. For example, when you start the game out with Locklear, Owyn, and Gorath, you can go straight down the road to Krondor, or take the long way around. The Broad: Most every chapter gives the player the run of the map of the Kingdom. As long as the player presses on, the game will get won. The only way for the game to be lost, is for the characters to all die in battle, or for some critical quest item to be lost in a game quirk (bug). The characters follow the storyline in each chapter, and must complete the chapter objectives to move on to the next one. The Narrow: There is a linear progression of chapters in Betrayal at Krondor, with only one outcome. Gameplay in Betrayal at Krondor follows a simultaneously narrow and broad path. There are some very involved side quests, which have little impact on the actual story, but serve to get the player much more involved in the game. Many non-player characters ( NPCs) have lots of dialogue, and even (gasp) quests for the characters to complete. There is a massive amount of side story in Betrayal at Krondor. The player must try to avert the war, and in the course of doing so, travel to many different parts of the Kingdom, the Moredhel lands, and even another planet. The course of the game has the characters uncover the betrayal which has set the Kingdom and the Moredhel up for another war. The game follows a series of chapters, each of which is a different part of the story, and has different objectives for the player to complete with his party of characters. Owyn Belforte joins them, and their quest to get Gorath to Krondor alive. Betrayal at Krondor starts off with some action, with a scene of an assassin attacking Gorath and Locklear on the road to Krondor. The dark elves, the Moredhel (Gorath's people) are on the war path, and the Kingdom is threatened with a terrible war. Gorath bears a warning for Prince Arutha of Krondor. Locklear, a squire of the court of Krondor, capital of the Western Realm, is escorting a Moredhel chieftan, Gorath, to the city of Krondor. Feist was not terribly upset, though, what with Betrayal at Krondor being a good game overall. This led to a few problems after the release of the game, when Feist said that the artists on the game must not have read descriptions of the characters (for instance: James looked like at least 30 years old in BaK, when in fact he was quite a young man). Feist was not involved in the actual production of the game (though he was in on the writing). That adventure is the one of Betrayal at Krondor, a chapter of which revolves around that very spyglass (and a poison dispensing spider object).īetrayal at Krondor is draws heavily from Feist's universe, and he had input for the game's story, Raymond E. For instance, in Rage of a Demon King, the character of James uses a 'magical' spy glass, briefly, which he alludes to having acquired while on an adventure. Furthermore, Feist has taken the events of Betrayal at Krondor to heart, and has included ever so subtle references to the story of the game in his later books. The game is actually billed as being part of the Riftwar Legacy, which has been expanded to include several books (one of which is a Feist-written novelization of Betrayal at Krondor). BaK (as it is frequently abbreviated) includes many of the memorable characters and locations from the Riftwar fantasy series by Feist. Further details about this cohort are available elsewhere. We obtained information from clinical records of all adult patients (age ≥ 18 years) with a positive COVID-19 clinical diagnosis upon hospital admission, confirmed either by positive antigen or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. This is an observational, longitudinal study in a prospective cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 admitted at the Hospital de La Princesa, Madrid, Spain from February 2020 to September 2022. Our objective is to determine the association of ABO group types (if any) in hospitalized patients admitted acutely for COVID-19, and to explore it also in patients with Long COVID. Finally, to date a possible association of the ABO group with the development of Long COVID has not been explored, except from a small study from Najaf, Iraq. However, any association of ABO blood types with COVID-19 remains questionable. Red blood cells precursors express ACE-2 receptor and CD147 at day 5 of differentiation, which makes them susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is also well established that SARS-CoV-2 binds to human cells through the angiotensin-converting enzyme II (ACE-2) receptor. It is established that differences in ABO blood group antigen expression can increase or decrease host susceptibility to a number of infectious agents, including viruses. Notably, others have meta-analysed the same evidence, yet with inconclusive findings. A number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses are already available, signaling to a modest association, initially with type A and later with AB. Contrary to other determinants, this relationship of ABO blood group with COVID-19 has been highly controversial. In 2020, it was hypothesized that the ABO blood group could be related to the predisposition to and severity of COVID-19. The available information about risk and protective factors of incident COVID-19 and Long COVID is rich and still growing. It has been recently estimated that about one in seven individuals do not fully recover after the acute infection with SARS-CoV-2 at twelve months. This new yet ill-defined condition, encompasses a series of symptoms and ailments that has received many names. Now we know that many COVID-19 patients do not fully recover, and suffer for months (or years) a condition called Long COVID. The distribution of the ABO system of Long COVID patients did not show significant differences with respect to that of the total group (p ≥ 0.843). In parallel, of 676 patients with Long COVID, blood group determination was available for 135 (20.0%). Their distribution by ABO was: 653 (43.2%) group 0, 690 (45.6%) A, 113 (7.5%) B, and 57 (3.8%) AB, which corresponds to the expected frequencies in the general population. Up to September 2022, there were a total of 5,832 acute COVID-19 hospitalizations in our hospital, corresponding to 5,503 individual patients, of whom blood group determination was available for 1,513 (27.5%). 8/17/2023 0 Comments Fear of death tim heideckerWriting for Exclaim!, Vish Khanna gave the album a nine out of 10, praising his songwriting by comparing it to Elton John, John Lennon, and Paul Simon's, considering it "strikingly timeless and authentic rock music, helmed by an underground Renaissance man". Similarly, California legislators took up the cause, proposing legislation to ban sell-by dates and add distinctions to clarify that “best if used by” was a quality indicator, while “use by” would denote food safety. The legislation was originally introduced by the same coalition in 2021 without success. On Tuesday, a bipartisan and bicameral trio – Representatives Dan Newhouse, of Washington, and Chellie Pingree, of Maine, and Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut – again took aim at the issue and reintroduced the “Food Date Labeling Act”, a bill that would create a national standard around the labels. “You should feel like as long as it tastes and smells good and you enjoy it, you can eat it.” With one easy-to-grasp quality-based date, consumers could better discern when something will be at its best without adding on fears of getting sick. But the labels themselves, Broad Leib said, “are meant to be liberating”. So, now the challenge is ensuring broader understanding of the labels – and a more standardized system. “Consumers really want this and they demand it,” she said, adding that as people are increasingly far-removed from food production, there are concerns over not knowing how long something might last. There have also been moves to try to push out the labels entirely, but consumer advocacy groups quickly rebuked the idea. “No two states have the same rules which means they are clearly not based in science.” These dates generally refer to when a product will have the best flavor or quality or when to sell the product by and are not related to safety of the food Dr Andrea GlennĪccording to Broad Leib, part of the study’s aim was to identify what labels would work best if they were applied more broadly. “This is an indicator that the current system is misleading consumers,” said Emily Broad Leib, the director of Food Law and Policy Clinic at Harvard Law School and one of the researchers behind the study, noting that an absent federal standard has only amplified confusion and misuse. The same study found that more than a third also believed the dates were federally regulated, with an additional 26% reporting they were unsure. However, an overwhelming majority of Americans still rely on the dates for food safety decisions.Ī study published in 2019 that relied on surveys of more than a thousand people across the US found that 84% have tossed a food because the date marked on the package had passed. Odd or off odor, flavor, color or texture are better indicators of potential danger. It’s far more useful instead to look for signs of spoilage. “These dates generally refer to when a product will have the best flavor or quality or when to sell the product by and are not related to safety of the food,” she said. She notes that both a global food system where products travel farther, and food handling practices can play a larger role in food safety. “There is nothing concrete for these dates related to food-borne illness,” said Dr Andrea Glenn, a postdoctoral research fellow and registered dietitian at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. Sicknesses associated with mold and bacteria found on bad food can be serious and the fears are warranted, but the labels do little to ward off risks, experts say. 8/17/2023 0 Comments Are skin tags badSome people may have a genetic predisposition to develop skin tags. Friction - from skin rubbing against skin or clothing rubbing against skin - is one possible trigger. No one knows exactly why skin tags form, but they’re more common with age, obesity and pregnancy. Common sites include the eyelids, neck, armpits, groin area and under the breasts. Skin tags can appear almost anywhere, but they tend to grow in skin folds. Sometimes they stay that way, but often they begin to slowly protrude from the skin. They are usually flesh colored but may be darker. Skin tags, technically called acrochordons, are benign skin growths made of collagen fibers, nerve cells, fat cells and a covering of skin. (And above all, don’t reach for the scissors, nail clippers or a piece of string!) What is a skin tag? In that case, head for the dermatologist, not the drugstore. And, let’s face it, if you have a skin tag that’s sitting in plain view, you may get tired of looking at it. They’re harmless, but sometimes annoying as they may rub against clothing or get snagged by jewelry. “It’s the same with certain types of cautery, depending on how fine the tip of the cautery is.Skin tags are those soft, fleshy growths that protrude from the skin and sometimes hang off it. I sometimes worry about hyperpigmentation with it,” Dr. “Cryotherapy is not as precise as physical removal of the skin tag. (And freezing off a skin tag can also lead to hyperpigmentation-areas of skin that are lighter than your overall skin tone-in people of all skin colors. However, many dermatologists are wary of using severe heat or cold to destroy tissue on people of color (or those who have a strong tendency to scar), since the inflammation caused by extreme deviations in temperature is more likely to trigger excessive melanin production, which can then lead to hyperpigmentation for those people. Sunder will often turn to electrocauterization of the skin tag’s stalk or the skin tag itself (destroying tissue with a heated electrical current), or cryotherapy (freezing it off). Wider skin tags typically get a topical anesthetic, like lidocaine, to minimize pain, Dr. If the skin tag is small, it won’t be very innervated, and she’ll do the procedure without numbing cream. The preferred method for smaller acrochordons is to cut them off by snipping the stalk at the base with small sterile scissors, Dr. There are a couple of ways board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons typically remove skin tags. While we wish skin tags would simply fall off on their own, they seldom do. How do doctors approach skin tag removal? Without insurance, he says it would typically cost you $200 and up to remove a handful of tags. However, there are some circumstances where getting rid of skin tags can be deemed medically necessary-if they’re interfering with daily activities, for example-and may therefore be covered by insurance, Dr. “I always recommend coming in.” You can schedule an appointment with your dermatologist, if you have one, or ask your primary care doctor if they cut off skin tags (some do)-if not, they can refer you to a derm who will know how to remove skin tags in the safest way possible.ĭoctor’s note: Generally speaking, skin tag removal is not covered by insurance. “I don't recommend anything at home,” Dr. The bottom line: If you’re wondering how to cut off skin tags painlessly or how to remove skin tags at home, there are no entirely safe steps or methods to try, and DIY’ing it could, again, lead to bleeding, scarring, and/or an infection. “The biggest issue is that the things people use are not sterile and skin tags actually bleed quite a bit,” she adds. Unfortunately, the larger the tag-and the more likely you are to try the ol’ dental floss trick-the higher the chances of excess bleeding and skin scarring (and that’s the best-case scenario-you could also give yourself a new and nastier skin issue in the form of an infection), Dr. “For larger skin tags, the hack of tying a piece of dental floss tightly around the base of the tag can actually work by cutting off circulation-after a few days, the tag will dry up and fall off,” Dr. “Despite big promises, the at-home creams do not deliver,” Dr. For those of you hoping to learn how to remove skin tags yourself, unfortunately, the chances are slim that you can successfully and safely get rid of them, according to the experts we talked to. |
